Remembering Fiona Bennell: Tasmania's First Female Adaptive Rower
Rowing Tasmania is deeply saddened to share the news of the passing of Fiona Bennell, a true trailblazer for adaptive rowing in our state.
Fiona was the very first female adaptive rower in Tasmania's State Adaptive Programme, paving the way for the sport well before the Paralympic pathway existed. In 1990, she made history by competing in a demonstration non-sliding single scull event at the World Championships at Lake Barrington, a moment that helped put adaptive rowing on the map in Tasmania.
Fiona continued to build on that legacy, going on to represent Tasmania at the 1993 Nationals in Queensland, where she claimed the Women's Championship title.
Beyond her own achievements on the water, Fiona, together with her parents, was a steadfast supporter of the Adaptive Programme, championing its growth and helping create opportunities for the athletes who would follow in her footsteps.
Fiona's courage, determination, and pioneering spirit leave a lasting legacy in Tasmanian rowing. Our thoughts are with her family and all who knew and rowed alongside her.
Her funeral will be held at 1:00pm on Thursday.
Rest in peace, Fiona.
